Russian Embassy in Nigeria has reacted to claims linking a Nigerian citizen resident in Russia to alleged funding of student protests in Edo State, South-South Nigeria.
According to the embassy, the allegations are being taken seriously and both countries are working towards stronger legal cooperation to address any unlawful activities.
In a statement, the embassy referred to comments made by the Edo State Governor’s Press Secretary, Patrick Ebojele, regarding the student protests in Ekpoma and called for the expedited signing of two draft bilateral agreements that would enable effective cooperation between Russian and Nigerian law enforcement agencies.
The agreements, which include cooperation between the Prosecutor General’s Office of Russia and the Federal Ministry of Justice of Nigeria, would provide a framework for joint investigation of such allegations.
The embassy also reminded that an Agreement on Mutual Legal Assistance in Criminal Matters, signed in 2018, is yet to be ratified by Nigeria.
The Russian government is hoping for swift action on these agreements to strengthen collaboration between both countries and prevent criminal activities.
