The Chief Judge of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Justice Husseini Baba Yusuf, has inaugurated the FCT Area Council Election Appeal Tribunal, charging its members to uphold impartiality, integrity, and strict adherence to the law in the resolution of election disputes.

This is coming just a few days after the Chief Judge inaugurated the Election Petition Tribunal, ahead of the February 21st Area Council elections.

Justice Yusuf described the tribunal’s establishment as a crucial constitutional exercise aimed at safeguarding democratic governance at the grassroots level and maintaining public confidence in the judiciary.

He emphasized that the tribunal’s role is not to confer political advantage or bow to public pressure, but to administer justice strictly in line with the Constitution and relevant electoral laws.

The Chief Judge noted that election petitions are sui generis and time-bound, requiring disciplined and professional adjudication.

Justice Yusuf urged members of the tribunal to resist external influence, ensure fair hearing for all parties, and uphold the sanctity of their judicial oath.

He warned against allowing political convenience or popular sentiment to dictate judicial decisions, stressing that rulings must be based on credible evidence, established legal principles, and binding precedents.

The Chief Judge also cautioned political parties, counsel, and the public against intimidation, misinformation, or disorder, reiterating that the courts remain the proper channel for resolving electoral grievances.

Members of the panel include, Justice Sulieman Bolaji Belgore as the Chairman of the panel, Justice Maryam Aliyu Hassan and Justice Aliyu Yunusa Shafa as members.
