The push to turn Enugu State into an APC stronghold is gathering pace, with Governor pPeter Mbah taking the lead in the party’s ongoing electronic membership registration across the State.
PThe Governor at a public event had set a target of two million registered members, representing a significant share of the state’s voting ppopulation.
Whether that target can be met and if it will translate into votes in the 2027 general elections; remains the big question.
Until recently, Enugu State in South East zone of Nigeria was conveniently seen as a Peoples Democratic Party, PDP state, a political identity it had held since Nigeria’s return to democracy in 1999.
That dominance shifted when Governor Peter Mbah defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, a move that changed the political balance in the State.
To underscore his position as the new leader of the APC and custodian of the party structure in Enugu, Governor Mbah became the first officially registered member in the ongoing APC e-registration exercise.
At the event, the Governor made it clear that there is no turning back in the State’s commitment to the party.
The e-registration exercise has gained traction across wards and local government areas, with both old members reaffirming their loyalty and new entrants signing up to join the party.
Party officials say the process is designed to deepen grassroots participation, strengthen internal organisation, and reposition the APC ahead of future elections.
But, figures from the party suggest that the numbers so far, still fall short of projections, with less than a week left in the exercise.
Beyond the numbers are even a bigger test – which is, whether party registration will convert into voter turnout and electoral success in 2027.
As Nigeria’s democracy continues to evolve, exercises like this underline a growing realization that democracy is not sustained by elections alone, but by continuous participation, engagement, and inclusion like this.
