The Nigerian Senate has urged an immediate reassessment of security strategies in Katsina State, calling for decisive federal intervention following renewed bandit attacks that have left dozens dead across several communities.
The call followed a motion sponsored by Dandutse Muntari, who drew lawmakers’ attention to the recent ambush of operatives of the Nigeria Police Mobile Force in Guga, Bakori Local Government Area. The daylight attack claimed the lives of three officers, while two others sustained critical injuries.
Lawmakers disclosed that at least 35 people have been killed in coordinated attacks across the Funtua Zone within a two-week period, warning that the scale and frequency of the violence reflect a worsening security situation.
The Senate further noted that ongoing bandit activity has severely disrupted livelihoods, with more than 50,000 farmlands reportedly abandoned, raising concerns about food production and economic stability in the state.

Members cautioned that without swift action, the situation could further deepen food insecurity and humanitarian distress, both within Katsina and beyond.
While commending Bola Tinubu and security agencies for interventions already undertaken, lawmakers urged sustained and coordinated operations until criminal networks are dismantled.
The Senate also called on the President to expedite approval for the establishment of a military barracks in the affected area, as earlier pledged, and directed the Inspector-General of Police to ensure that any newly deployed police squadron is equipped with a minimum of three Armoured Personnel Carriers to support intelligence-led operations, including forest patrols and cross-border coordination.
In addition, lawmakers tasked the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and the National Emergency Management Agency with providing immediate relief to affected communities and families impacted by the violence.
The Senate concluded deliberations by observing a minute of silence in honour of victims of the recent attacks and called on communities nationwide to remain united, vigilant, and supportive of security agencies while resisting collaborators who aid criminal activity.
