The Nigeria Police Force says it has uncovered a criminal network linked to job and relocation scams, rescuing more than one hundred victims from different locations across Cross River State.
The operations conducted by operatives of the Police Force Zone Six Headquarters in Calabar, has brought to public attention the growing risks surrounding irregular migration and exploitation of Nigerians seeking opportunities abroad under the popular “Japa” trend.
This trend is worsened by the poor economy, insecurity and social pressure, especially among the young population.
For many, the journey begins with difficult choices, resigning from stable employment, selling houses, disposing of personal property, and surrendering life savings, all in pursuit of what appears to be a guaranteed path out of the country.
But, the Nigerian Police say that in some cases, that dream leads unsuspecting victims into the hands of criminal networks operating under the guise of foreign job placements and visa arrangements.
Security reports indicate that victims in this case were lured with promises of overseas employment, citizenship, and seamless travel.
Instead of following through the traditional air flight routes, victims are transported to locations within Cross River State, where their movement and finances are gradually restricted.
The Police in the State have now rescued some victims of the fraud syndicate, who have since been handed over to the Cross River State Government for care, profiling, and reintegration.
Authorities are warning Nigerians to verify overseas job offers through recognised and lawful channels, as the pursuit of a better life abroad continues to expose many to exploitations.
