It’s a cheering news for Nigerian civil servants as the Federal Executive Council (FEC) has approved a new exit benefit scheme for federal civil servants.
The Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Didi Esther Walson‑Jack, says under the new policy, retiring civil servants will now receive a gratuity equal to 100% of their annual salary and allowances.
The Head of the Civil Service, said the new benefit will take effect from 1st January, 2026, and will apply to officers who have served the federal government for at least ten years.
Didi Esther Walson‑Jack described the approval as a major recognition of the dedication and sacrifice of civil servants across the country.
She noted that the scheme is designed to strengthen retirement benefits and support the federal government’s ongoing public service reform efforts.
The development also marks a significant shift in retirement benefits, coming twenty-two years after the introduction of the Contributory Pension Scheme.
According to the Head of Service, detailed guidelines for the implementation of the new gratuity payment will be communicated to Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) in the coming weeks.
