Nigeria and Ghana have signed a cooperation agreement on search and rescue operations for aircraft in distress in both countries.

The agreement was signed between the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority, NCAA and the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority, GCAA.
Director-General of Civil Aviation in Nigeria, Captain Chris Najomo, signed on behalf of the Nigerian government, while his Ghanaian counterpart, Reverend Stephen Wilfred Arthur, signed for Ghana.
Speaking during the ceremony on March 9, 2026, Captain Najomo said the agreement will strengthen search and rescue systems between both countries and improve cooperation in responding to aircraft emergencies.
He noted that when an aircraft is in distress, time is critical in saving lives, making collaboration between neighbouring countries essential.
Najomo added that the initiative, which aligns with the aviation development agenda of Nigeria’s Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, focuses on stronger safety oversight, improved operational capacity and deeper regional collaboration within Africa’s aviation sector.
The agreement is also expected to enhance cross-border coordination and emergency preparedness for faster and more effective rescue operations within the region.
