The Cross River State Government says waste management operations in Calabar metropolis have been scaled up significantly, with the full deployment of evacuation fleets, activation of sanitation enforcement teams, and a renewed commitment to maintaining the city as a model of urban cleanliness in Nigeria.
This was made known during an inspection tour of the city led by the State Governor Bassey Otu, who assured residents that his administration is fully committed to delivering a clean, green, and healthy environment.
Calabar has long been regarded as one of the cleanest cities in Nigeria, a reputation that was firmly established under the administration of former Governor Donald Duke in the early 2000s, when the state capital became a national model for environmental sanitation.
That legacy which earned Calabar praises both nationally and internationally as one of the cleanest cities on the African continent, is what the current administration of Governor Bassey Edet Otu says it is determined to preserve and build upon.
Representing Governor Bassey Otu during an inspection tour of the state capital, his Special Adviser on General Duties, Ekpeyong Akiba noted that his administration is working to ensure that waste management contractors are adequately resourced to deliver efficient and consistent service across the metropolis.
Residents of the Calabar metropolis who spoke during the exercise threw their weight behind the government’s sanitation campaign, but were unanimous in identifying one major challenge, the activities of scavengers.
With boots on ground and a clear plan in motion, the Cross River State Government says Calabar’s Clean and Green identity is not just a memory, but a mission.
