The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Joash Amupitan, has called on Nigerians to translate the lessons of Ramadan into a renewed commitment to electoral integrity as the country prepares for the 2027 general elections.
In his Eid-el-Fitr message, signed by his Chief Press Secretary and Media Adviser, Adedayo Oketola, the INEC Chairman described the end of Ramadan as a victory of discipline over self, noting that the values of restraint, honesty, and sacrifice must reflect in the nation’s democratic process.
Professor Amupitan said the period provides a moral foundation for the Commission as it prepares for the 2026 off-cycle governorship elections in Ekiti and Osun States, as well as the 2027 general polls.
He noted that the overlap of Ramadan and the Christian Lenten season highlights a shared responsibility among Nigerians toward nation-building, stressing that patience, integrity, and empathy are essential ingredients for credible and transparent elections.

Addressing INEC staff nationwide, the Chairman assured that employee welfare remains a priority, citing the recent Iftar gathering at the Commission—the first in eight years—as part of efforts to boost morale and strengthen internal engagement.
Professor Amupitan also described the upcoming governorship elections in Ekiti and Osun States as a critical test of the Commission’s readiness ahead of the 2027 general elections.
