The Nigeria Labour Congress NLC, on Tuesday staged a dramatic picketing of the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company, AEDC headquarters in Abuja over alleged disengagement of nearly 900 workers.
The Labour Union also issued a 48-hour ultimatum to the company’s management to address the crisis or risk a shutdown of operations.
The picketing which was led by NLC President, Joe Ajaero, accused AEDC of carrying out the mass sack under false pretence, describing the exercise as “the height of deceit” and a dangerous precedent in Nigeria’s already troubled power sector.

The NLC President said the crisis dates back to about six months ago when AEDC management claimed the disengagement would affect only workers who had reached retirement age or were at the verge of retiring.
He didclosed that investigation by the union revealed a completely different reality, as majority of those affected were not at retirement age adding that some had not even spent up to five or six years in service.
Ajaero noted that the picketing became necessary, because the AEDC had promised to revisit the exercise, noting that no action has been taken, six months after despite repeated engagements through zonal consultative meetings.
Effort by AIT Online Abulu Osemuaghu to reach the AEDC management proved abortive, as they were neither responding to calls nor text messages
