Federal Government has instituted a 13-count charge at the Federal High Court in Abuja against six individuals, including two retired senior military officers and a serving police inspector, over an alleged plot to overthrow the Nigerian government.
The defendants include Major General Mohammed Ibrahim Gana (Rtd), Captain Erasmus Ochegobia Victor (Rtd), Inspector Ahmed Ibrahim, Zekeri Umoru, Bukar Kashim Goni, and Abdulkadir Sani, who are expected to take their plea on Wednesday before Justice Joyce Abdulmalik.
Also mentioned in the case is former Minister of State for Petroleum Resources and one-time Bayelsa State Governor, Timipre Sylva, who is currently listed as being at large.
According to the charge filed by the Office of the Attorney-General of the Federation and signed by the Director of Public Prosecutions, Rotimi Oyedepo, SAN, the accused persons allegedly conspired in 2025 to destabilise the country and unlawfully challenge the authority of the President.
Prosecutors claim the group planned actions amounting to treason, including efforts to “levy war” against the state. They are also accused of withholding critical intelligence about a separate plot allegedly involving one Colonel Mohammed Ma’aji, and failing to take steps to stop it.
In addition to treason-related allegations, the defendants face charges under the Terrorism (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022, for allegedly supporting terrorist activities.
The government further accuses several of the defendants of handling funds believed to be linked to terrorism financing and are being prosecuted under the Money Laundering (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022.
