President Bola Tinubu has commended Nigeria’s aviation sector following the country’s impressive 91.45% safety rating by the International Civil Aviation Organisation, ICAO, describing it as a significant milestone that strengthens global confidence in the country’s airspace.
The ICAO rating, derived from its Universal Safety Oversight Audit Programme, USOAP, evaluates countries on their ability to effectively manage aviation safety risks. Nigeria’s latest score represents its highest ever, placing it well above the West African regional average of 61.1% and the global average of 70.4%.
In a statement, presidential spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga said the achievement reflects the Federal Government’s commitment to strengthening aviation safety standards and aligning with international best practices.
He noted that since the inception of the ICAO audit programme in 1999, Nigeria has undergone four safety audits, with steady improvements recorded over the years through enhanced regulatory oversight and compliance with global standards.
The President also highlighted his administration’s focus on infrastructure and transportation as key drivers of economic growth, noting that a safe and efficient aviation sector is central to positioning Nigeria as a major air transport hub.
Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, had earlier outlined a five-point agenda for the sector, with strict adherence to safety regulations as a top priority.
President Tinubu praised the Ministry for the feat, stating that the high rating would boost investor confidence and attract more investments into aviation infrastructure, maintenance services, and airline operations.
He, however, urged continued vigilance, directing the Ministry to fully implement all recommendations by ICAO auditors to sustain and surpass the current rating.
