The leadership crisis rocking the African Democratic Congress, ADC has taken a new turn as the party has formally appealed to the Chief Justice of Nigeria, CJN Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, to hasten the delivery of judgement in the matter pending before the Supreme Court.
The party in a letter, warned that any further delay could jeopardise its participation in the 2027 general elections.
The appeal, described as urgent, was signed by its lead counsel, Shuaibu Aruwa, who stressed that the situation could cause irreversible damage to the party’s political future.
The ADC explained that the Supreme Court had reserved judgement on April 22 after hearing arguments from all parties involved in the dispute between David Mark and Nafiu Bala Gombe, alongside other respondents.
However, no date has yet been fixed for the ruling.
According to the party, the delay has already created uncertainty, especially following the decision of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC to withdraw recognition of the party’s current leadership.
It argued that the action, has left the ADC without a functional national structure at a critical time when preparations for the next general elections are underway.
The letter emphasised that compliance with INEC’s timetable is time-sensitive and hinges on clarity from the apex court.
The Court of Appeal had previously ruled against Mark, describing his appeal as premature and filed without proper authorisation.
It also directed that the case be returned to the Federal High Court for accelerated hearing, while ordering all parties to maintain status quo ante bellum.
Following that directive, INEC moved to suspend recognition of the party’s leadership pending the final resolution of the dispute, an action that triggered the current urgency.
