Nigeria's Coat-of-Arms

The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to repositioning veterinary services as a cornerstone of national food security, public health, and economic development.

Minister of livestock development, IDI MUKHTA-MAIHA, who made the commitment at the occasion of strategic engagement towards repositioning veterinary services at sub-national level said connecting the veterinary service to a functional system, will ensure that government interventions translate into measurable outcomes, eradicate trans-boundary animal diseases, zoonoses and safeguard animals and human health.

Veterinary Services occupy a central position in national development.

They underpin livestock productivity, safeguard public health, enable safe trade, and contribute significantly to food and nutrition security.

Yet, despite their importance, the impact of veterinary services in Nigeria has not been commensurate with the scale of investment and policy attention over the years.

The minister of livestock development, IDI MUKHTA-MAIHA has called for a clear action plan that will address structural and operational gaps that have continued to limit performance in the subsector.

Participants were encouraged to focus on actionable solutions that are realistic, given the existing constraints and opportunities as strengthening the veterinary service will address challenges of zoonotic diseases in Nigeria.

This engagement meeting is expected to generate practical, implementable recommendations that will inform ongoing efforts and provide guidance for future purposes.
