NASU, SSANU begin indefinite strike in public universities

Following the failure of authorities at last minute meeting by the Minister of Education to arrest industrial action in the country’s universities, two non-teaching staff unions have directed members to begin indefinite and comprehensive strike from midnight of May 1, 2026.

This is contained in a circular to members jointly signed by the General Secretary of the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions, NASU, Peters Adeyemi and the President of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities, SSANU, Haruna Mohammed.

The statement said in view of the failure of the ministry to establish when the renegotiation of 2009 agreement with non-academic staff and no commitment to 30% increase in take home pay of workers in federal institutions, the Joint Action Committee of SSANU and NASU hereby direct its members to embark on total and comprehensive strike in all universities and inter-university centres campuses from 12:00am of 1st May, 2026.

The following government officials were in attendance at the meeting held between the unions and the Education Minister, Dr. Tunji Alausa on Wednesday, April 29, the Minister of State for Education, Professor Suwaiba Ahmad; Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Education, Abel Enitan; Executive Secretaries of National Universities Commission, NUC, Professor Abdullahi Ribadu and that of
National Commission for
Colleges of Education, NCCE, Angela Ajala among others.

The discussion at the meeting centred on the slow pace of renegotiation of 2009
agreements for the non-teaching staff unions and their demand for its conclusion not later than 30th April, 2026. It also highlighted the unions’ rejection of the 30% CONTTA award letter in circulation.
