Nigeria’s Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has directed the Police Monitoring Unit to investigate a petition seeking a probe into allegations against two senior police officers over the disappearance of activist and blogger, Abubakar Idris also known as Dadiyata.
The directive followed a petition submitted by Kano-based lawyer, Abba A. Hikima, over claims allegedly made by a former aide to ex-Zamfara governor, Bello Matawalle, linking the officers to Dadiyata’s disappearance.
In an acknowledgment letter dated May 8, 2026, the IGP directed the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the Police Monitoring Unit to “attend to” the request for investigation.

Dadiyata, a lecturer and outspoken social media commentator, was last seen on August 2, 2019, after unidentified gunmen reportedly abducted him from his residence in Barnawa, Kaduna State, North-West Nigeria. His whereabouts remain unknown nearly seven years later despite repeated calls for an independent investigation by civil society groups and human rights organisations.
