The leadership of the Social Democratic Party, SDP, recognised by the party’s National Executive Committee, NEC, has approved the expulsion of some members over alleged anti-party activities, as internal divisions continue to shape the party’s preparations for its national convention and presidential primaries.
The decision was reached during a closed-door NEC meeting in Abuja ahead of the convention.
Briefing journalists after the meeting, the party’s National Welfare Secretary, Judith Shuaibu, said the NEC endorsed the expulsion of about ten members accused of actions considered detrimental to the unity and stability of the party.
Those listed for expulsion include former presidential candidate , National Secretary and factional chairman .
According to her, the party leadership is seeking to stabilise its internal structure after months of factional disputes and competing claims to authority.
Also speaking, National Chairman said the party remained open to reconciliation with members willing to align with its leadership and constitution.
He also commended the media for its coverage of party activities and acknowledged the presence of officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, at the proceedings.
The convention comes barely two weeks after a rival faction led by Sadiq Abubakar Gombe conducted a separate convention and presidential primaries in Bauchi State, further exposing the deepening leadership crisis within the SDP.
