Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Idi Abbas, says the Nigerian Navy has, over the last 70 years, evolved into a formidable institution capable of delivering on its national mandate of securing Nigeria’s territorial waters against external aggression.
Speaking at an international media briefing to mark the 70th anniversary of the Nigerian Navy, the Chief of Policy and Plans at Naval Headquarters, Rear Admiral Akiola Olodude, said the Navy has recorded significant achievements since its establishment in 1956.
The naval authorities say the Nigerian Navy has recorded significant achievements despite daunting challenges such as oil bunkering, sea piracy, and crude oil smuggling along the nation’s waterways.
The Chief of Policy and Plans said that, aside from advancements in shipbuilding, the Nigerian Navy has evolved into a technology-driven institution capable of meeting the demands of the prevailing security environment.
The International media briefing was an avenue for the Nigerian Navy to unveil the activities lined up for the 70th anniversary of an institution saddled with the mandates of defending Nigeria’s maritime territory from external aggression and protect the country’s economic interests across its coastline, territorial waters, and exclusive economic zone.
