The Plateau State Police Command has launched a Violent Crimes Response Unit, VCRU, aimed at strengthening security operations and promoting human rights-based policing across the state.
Speaking during the inauguration in Jos, Commissioner of Police Bassey Ewah said the unit was created on the directive of the Inspector General of Police to respond swiftly to violent crimes and emerging security threats while ensuring accountability and respect for the rule of law.
The Police Commissioner noted that officers deployed to the unit were carefully selected based on professionalism, integrity, and operational experience in handling sensitive assignments. He added that the operatives have been trained to tackle violent crimes effectively while remaining accountable to the public.
CP Ewah also announced the establishment of a civilian oversight mechanism to monitor the activities of the unit and address complaints from members of the public where necessary. He warned that officers of the unit remain subject to the provisions of the Police Act and other extant laws, stressing that any form of misconduct would attract disciplinary action.
