The vision to have every building in Nigeria get a unique digital address that emergency responders, security agencies, and delivery services could easily locate is underway.
Key government officials and stakeholders gathered in Abuja on Thursday to make Nigeria’s National Digital Alphanumeric Postcode System for Ministries, Departments and Agencies a reality.
Postmaster General of the Federation, Tola Odeyemi, said that the initiative when fully operational will create a one-stop identification hub for all citizens, making people centred services far efficient.
Odeyemi, emphasised that the success of the initiative will depend on widespread adoption across public institutions, stressing that the system will provide trusted location intelligence for security, public safety, and national development.
The project, driven by the Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy in partnership with NIPOST, is designed to assign every addressable location in Nigeria a unique, GIS-enabled alphanumeric code.
Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani described the Digital Postcode as a critical layer of Nigeria’s digital public infrastructure. He said the system will improve national security, emergency response, logistics, e-commerce, and government service delivery by eliminating the long-standing challenge of inconsistent addressing.
The workshop focused on integrating the new Digital Postcode system into government operations, making location identification more accurate, efficient and secure.
With the first phase of implementation expected to roll out later this year, speakers at the meeting cutting across MDAs, highlighted the importance of a unique postcode in the ever evolving digital space, helping to build solutions across board.
The National Digital Alphanumeric Postcode System is set to transform how Nigerians are located, connected, and served—marking a significant milestone in the country’s digital transformation journey.
