Rapid technological advancement, urbanisation, climate-related challenges, and rising public expectations require that engineering projects be conceived, designed, executed, and maintained in strict accordance with professional standards and global best practices.
The President of the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria, Prof. Sadiq Abubakar, who said this at the pre-conference of the 34th Engineering Assembly in Abuja, noted that Nigeria will continue to witness incidents of infrastructure failure, building collapse, industrial accidents, and the activities of unqualified persons engaged in engineering practice if urgent action is not taken.
Building and infrastructure collapse not only result in the loss of lives and valuable investments but also diminish public confidence in the engineering profession.
Abubakar explained that there is an urgent need for stronger engineering governance founded on professionalism, accountability, effective regulation, and strict compliance with engineering standards.
He said the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria is willing to work with relevant government agencies to ensure that a permanent solution is found to the recurring incidents of infrastructure deficits and collapse in Nigeria.
The 34th Engineering Assembly has the theme: “Advancing Public Safety in Nigeria through Strategic Engineering Regulation, Enforcement, and a Tiered Sanctioning Regime.”
