The Benue State House of Assembly has suspended the Chairman of Kwande Local Government Council, Vitalis Neji, for three months over allegations of gross misconduct and abuse of office.
The Assembly has directed the Vice Chairman to take over the affairs of the council while investigations continue.
The decision followed the adoption of a report by an ad-hoc committee set up by the House to investigate allegations against the council chairman.
Vitalis Neji had appeared before the committee to respond to the allegations.
But the Assembly says his explanations did not satisfactorily address the issues raised.
Lawmakers subsequently approved his suspension for three months to allow further investigations to proceed without interference.
The decision was taken during Thursday’s plenary, presided over by Speaker Berger Alfred Emberga.
The Assembly says the suspension is intended to provide an environment for what it describes as a transparent and unhindered investigation into allegations of gross misconduct and abuse of office.
Neji is expected to hand over to the Vice Chairman of Kwande Local Government Council, who will oversee the council during the period of suspension.
Neji previously served as Chairman of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria, ALGON, in Benue State, before resigning from the position on August 14.
