The 2027 governorship race in Ogun State may not yet be settled within the All Progressives Congress, APC, despite the emergence of Senator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola, popularly known as Yayi, as the party’s consensus candidate.
One of the aspirants, Abayomi Semako Hunye, has rejected reports of his withdrawal from the race and has gone a step further by presenting his running mate.
The political calculations within the Ogun State chapter of the All Progressives Congress appear far from settled, with fresh indications that the party’s consensus arrangement may still face internal resistance.
While Senator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola, popularly known as Yayi, has been presented as the consensus governorship aspirant, Abayomi Semako Hunye says he remains firmly in the race.
Hunye, who has rejected reports that he has stepped down or reached an agreement with his opponents, says his legal challenge to the governorship primary remains active.
In a move that further underscores his determination, Hunye has now unveiled his running mate, signalling that his ambition to contest the 2027 governorship election under the APC is still very much alive.
The development appears to challenge the impression that the emergence of Yayi has brought the party’s governorship contest to a close.
For the APC, the latest development could raise fresh concerns about internal cohesion as the party prepares for the 2027 election.
