President Bola Tinubu has mourned the death of the elder statesman, renowned businessman and former Governor of the defunct Gongola State, Dr. Bamanga Muhammad Tukur, who died at the age of 90.

President Tinubu described the death of the Tafidan Adamawa as the end of a remarkable chapter in Nigeria’s political and economic history.

According to a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu described the late Tukur as a towering figure whose distinguished career spanned public administration, governance, industry, politics and pan-African business leadership.

The President recalled Tukur’s contributions as General Manager of the Nigerian Ports Authority, NPA, between 1975 and 1982, where he helped modernise port operations and improve Nigeria’s maritime sector.

Tukur later ventured into politics during the Second Republic and was elected Governor of the defunct Gongola State in 1983.

The deceased also distinguished himself in the private sector as Chairman of BHI Holdings and the DADDO Group of Companies, with interests in manufacturing, agriculture, logistics and trading.

He also served as Federal Minister of Industries under the administration of General Sani Abacha between 1993 and 1995.

On the continental stage, President Tinubu noted that Tukur was a strong advocate for Africa’s economic development, serving as Executive President of the African Business Roundtable and Chairman of the NEPAD Business Group.

Tukur also served as National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, from March 2012 to January 2014.

President Tinubu described the late elder statesman as urbane, generous and deeply rooted in the values of integrity and service, noting that Nigeria would miss his wise counsel and fatherly guidance.

The President extended his condolences to the Tukur family, the Fombina Emirate of Adamawa, the government and people of Adamawa State, as well as Nigeria’s political and business communities.

President Tinubu prayed that Almighty Allah would forgive the shortcomings of the late statesman, grant him Aljannah Firdaus and comfort all those mourning his death.

Meanwhile, the Northern Nigeria Governors’ Forum, NNGF, has also expressed grief over the death of former Governor of the defunct Gongola State and former PDP National Chairman, Dr. Bamanga Tukur.

NNGF Chairman and Gombe State Governor, Inuwa Yahaya, described the late elder statesman as a towering figure whose decades of public service contributed to Nigeria’s political and economic development.

In a condolence message on behalf of his colleagues, Governor Yahaya, said Nigeria had lost one of its most experienced public servants, political leaders and champions of economic development.

He commiserated with the government and people of Adamawa State, the Bamanga Tukur family, friends and associates of the deceased, praying to Allah to forgive his shortcomings and grant him Aljannatul Firdaus.
