The Colleges of Education Academic Staff Union, COEASU has again reminded the Federal Government of its resolve to shut down the colleges nationwide, over the failure of the authorities to keep to agreements reached with the teachers.
In a statement, COEASU President, Smart Olugbeko, is worried that for the umpteenth time, it has called on well-meaning Nigerians and stakeholders in the tertiary education sector, to prevail on the government to urgently take appropriate actions, to avert an industrial crisis in the College of Education, COE, system.
COEASU noted that the Federal Government has been unfair to Colleges of Education, with its dilly-dallying posture to renegotiate the COEASU-FGN 2009 Agreement, by refusing to constitute her renegotiation team, after acknowledging receipt of the union’s team list, over three months ago.
COEASU is also threatening to strike over the non-release of the pledged N15b Revitalization Fund, which is a far cry from the over N400b, which is the outcome of the 2014 Presidential Needs Assessment, across public Colleges of Education.
According to COEASU, the recalcitrant insistence on IPPIS, against a more reliable alternative payment, the UTAS, has caused more havoc to tertiary institutions than good, adding that up till the end of March 2022, one thousand two hundred and nineteen lecturers in COEs have experienced one problem or the other with IPPIS.
