Nigeria’s ruling All Progressives Congress, (APC), enters into a make or mar special convention to decide the party’s Presidential Candidate for 2023.
The Eagles Square, the venue of the presidential primaries of the party wears the traditional green, white, blue and red colours of the party, as delegates from different parts of the country arrive at the arena.
The Chairman of the Organizing Committee, Governor Hope Uzodinmma, said a lot has gone into the organization of the event.
He said as the ruling party, APC is expected to exhibit quality in everything it does, even as he assured that the APC will deliver a world-class convention.
He, however, called on all aspirants to abide by the outcome of the convention.
About 2,322 delegates will decide the fate of 23 aspirants, vying for the sole ticket of the party.
The number may have pruned, as the race for the ticket narrows down to 5 top contenders, with last-minute high wired political horse-trading in top gear, for more candidates to withdraw from the race.
Amongst the top contenders are former Governor of Lagos, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo and the President of the Senate, Ahmad Lawan.
Others are Kayode Fayemi and Rotimi Ameachi.
On Monday, the National Secretariat of the All Progressives Congress, (APC), erupted in total commotion, after the National Chairman, Abdullahi Adamu, announced the President of the Senate, Ahmed Lawan as the consensus candidate of the party for the 2023 Presidential Election.
The announcement of Lawan immediately sparked reactions, as some members of the National Working Committee, NWC, accused the National Chairman of taking a unilateral decision.
The choice of Lawan comes as shocking to many, less than two days, after 11 Northern APC governors and leaders of the party, advised the party to zone the APC presidential ticket to the South.
This was as President Muhammadu Buhari on Monday, told the Northern governors and the National Working Committee of the party, to come up with a consensus candidate for the election.
If the nomination of Ahmed Lawan stands, it will have to be ratified at this convention.
If it doesn’t, aspirants will have to go for a proper election.
