Months after the indefinite postponement of the governing council meeting of the university of Lagos, an emergency meeting has been called in Abuja
The meeting has suffered setbacks following the faceoff between the Academic staff union of university, UNILAG chapter and the Wale Babalakin-led governing council
Ait gathered that the notice of the meeting which was signed by the university’s registrar, Oladejo Azeez, on August 10, said the emergency meeting was sanctioned by the council chairman, Babalakin in response to a request by the vice-chancellor, Oluwatoyin Ogundipe, via a letter dated July 15, and addressed to the council chairman.
Just before the nationwide shutdown of schools as a result of the COVID-19 outbreak, the ASUU Unilag chairman Dele Ashiru issued a statement saying it wants the removal of the governing council chairman, Wale Babalakin over gross misconduct
ait has also gathered that the Abuja meeting holding at the National universities commission is scheduled for three days, but an anonymous source at NUC told ait that the first day of the emergency meeting appears to be having teething problems already as some members were unsettled in the meeting
Our source said there also seems to be a calculated attempt to remove the university’s vice chancellor, professor Oluwatoyin Ogundipe.
Meanwhile, ASUU Chairman UNILAG, Dele Ashiru speaking to ait’S Abulu Osemuaghu via the telephone, refuted claims that the governing council meeting relocation to Abuja has nothing to do with his union’s grouse with the chairman of the governing board, Wale Babalakin.
For now, it is not certain if the meeting abruptly stopped on day one of a three-day schedule will still reconvene
