Burkina Faso

The African Union (A.U) has suspended Burkina Faso from the continental body following last Sunday’s ouster of President Roch Kabore by the military.

In a statement released this Monday , the AU’s 15-member Peace and Security Council voted to suspend Burkina Faso’s participation in its activities until constitutional order is restored in the country.

The AU’s move comes three days after the West African regional bloc, suspended Burkina Faso and threatened sanctions pending the outcome of meetings with the junta.

An ECOWAS mission headed by the Ghanaian Foreign Minister, Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey was expected to arrive in Ouagadougou on Monday, together with the UN Special Representative for West Africa and the Sahel (UNOWAS), Mahamat Saleh Annadif.

The joint delegation is to have meetings with the new military leaders as well as with the various Burkinabe stakeholders.

ECOWAS leaders are set to hold a summit on Thursday in the Ghanian capital, Accra, to assess the two missions to see whether they should impose sanctions.

The regional bloc slammed sanctions and suspended Mali and Guinea last year, two West African nations where soldiers sacked civilian governments and enforced military rule.
