Founder of the Abdulhafiz Umar Gusau (AUG) Foundation, Abdulhafiz Umar Barau (Dan Isan Gusau, Magayakin Tsafe), has been honoured with the Arewa Humanitarian Award 2025 at the Arewa Humanitarian Awards, Magazine & Summit (AHMAS) held at Merit House, Maitama, Abuja.

The award recognises Barau’s sustained contributions to humanitarian service, grassroots empowerment, and community-driven development initiatives across Northern Nigeria, with notable impact in Zamfara State.

Barau was represented at the ceremony by Engineer Kabiru Abdullahi Bungudu, Senior District Head of Bungudu and Sarkin Sudan of Bungudu, who received the award on his behalf.

Through the AUG Foundation, Barau has implemented food relief programmes, provided educational support, promoted youth empowerment, and delivered health-related interventions aimed at improving the welfare of vulnerable communities.

The foundation is noted for its emphasis on transparency, dignity, and community ownership in humanitarian service.

AHMAS is a platform dedicated to recognising individuals and organisations, making measurable social and humanitarian impact across Northern Nigeria.

In addition to the annual awards, it publishes the Arewa Humanitarian Magazine, which documents impact stories, promotes grassroots leadership, and encourages collaboration among traditional institutions, civil society organisations, development actors and policymakers.

In a message conveyed through his representative, Barau expressed appreciation to the organisers and dedicated the award to volunteers, partners, and community leaders working to uplift communities across the region.

“This recognition is not about one individual. It belongs to every volunteer, every community leader and every partner who believes that service to humanity is a shared responsibility,” he said, adding that the honour strengthens the foundation’s resolve to continue serving with sincerity and humility.

Barau also reaffirmed the AUG Foundation’s commitment to people-centred development, with continued focus on youth empowerment, support for vulnerable families, and sustainable community interventions.

Addressing public interest in his future political aspirations, Barau acknowledged ongoing consultations with community stakeholders and youth groups regarding the Zamfara Central Senatorial seat in 2027.

He stressed that any political decision would be guided by inclusive consultation, service to the people, and the long-term development priorities of the district.

“Leadership is a responsibility entrusted by the people. Consultations are ongoing, and when the time is right, we will communicate openly and responsibly,” he said.

The AHMAS 2025 event drew traditional rulers, policymakers, civil society leaders, and development practitioners from across Northern Nigeria, underscoring the importance of grassroots leadership and collaboration in addressing regional challenges.

The Arewa Humanitarian Award 2025 further highlights Abdulhafiz Umar Barau’s growing profile as a humanitarian leader, community advocate, and emerging voice in public service.
