The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, has issued a 21 day notice of strike to the federal government starting on Monday to address all outstanding issues including the continued poor funding of universities and education in Nigeria.

Chairman of ASUU, Emmanuel Osodeke who addressed journalists in Umuahia, the Abia State capital after the National Executive Council meeting of the union condemned in strong terms the seeming refusal of FG and state governments to decisively address all outstanding issues with ASUU while rejecting the slow pace of intervention by the minister of education in resolving the issues.

Arising from its national executive council meeting held at the university of Ibadan Oyo state, the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, undertook a comprehensive review of all its engagements with the federal and state governments on various outstanding issues hindering the development of the universities and the worsening living and working conditions in the universities and the Nation in general.

He explained why ASUU rejected the federal government’s move to divert tertiary education trust fund’s intervention grants to the students’ education loan scheme.

While government has refused to renegotiate the 2009 agreement, ASUU calls on the Tinubu administration to set in motion the process leading to the review and signing of the Nimi Briggs led negotiations draft agreement as a mark of goodwill and to reassess the Nigeria’s public universities.

ASUU also condemned the interference of world bank and International Monetary Fund IMF in Nigeria’s governance which has led to untold hardship to the people.

At the end of the ASUU NEC meeting, it resolved to embark on a strike if government failed to address all outstanding issues within the next 21 days.
