Abuja building collapse; FHA Director, Site Engineer to be charged for manslaughter

The FCT Minister, Muhammad Bello has ordered the immediate arrest of Federal Housing Authority Director who granted development permit for construction of collapsed two-storey building in Gwarinpa District of Abuja.

The minister who gave the order through the Coordinator, Abuja Metropolitan Management Council, Umar Shuaibu, during a news briefing on Saturday in Abuja, also directed security agencies to a take into custody Site Engineer who supervised construction of the collapsed two-storey building that killed three people and injured over 40 others.

The FCTA told journalists in Abuja on Saturday that preliminary findings suggested that there were breaches in the location of the building, the building plan approval, the control and the monitoring of the development by the Federal Housing Authority, FHA.

The administration therefore want the Director, Federal Housing Authority and Site Engineer to be charged for manslaughter of those who lost their lives in collapsed two-storey building.

The Administration said a thorough investigation would be conducted to unravel the immediate and remote causes of the incidence and take appropriate step towards prevention of future occurrence.

Rescue operation at the collapsed building was coordinated by the FCT Administration and it lasted for about 30 hours, within which the 24 persons trapped were brought out from the rubbles, 21 person were rescued alive, while 3 persons were fatally injured.
