The major opposition African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Nigeria has called for the resignation of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Chairman, Professor Joash Amupitan along with his National Commissioners insisting that the party is no longer confident in the Commission’s integrity and ability to conduct credible elections.
National Chairman of the Party, Senator David Mark made this position known while addressing a World Press conference in Abuja on Thursday in response to the electoral body’s delisting of the ADC’s leadership on April 1st, 2026
The Party says all processes leading to the emergence of its new leadership were duly monitored by officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission and wondered why the commission has chosen to take sides on the matter, insisting that the commission has no powers to interfere in the internal affairs of political parties
On the Court of Appeal ruling that resulted in the action of the Independent National Electoral Commission, the Party noted that Nafiu Bala Gombe resigned his position as member of the Party’s National Working Committee and the position was duly communicated to INEC.
Mark maintained that the Party is proceeding with all programmes leading to their National Convention as there is nothing under the law that makes INEC’s attendance a mandatory requirement after duly serving the Commission with notice of its activities
The Party accused the Tinubu-led administration of pursuing an agenda that will create a situation where President Bola Tinubu emerges as the only option left for the people in 2027, despite the widespread suffering and wanton killings across the country, which they say has deepened poverty, and worsened the country’s security situation
They called on the international community to take note of INEC’s actions of April 1st, which the party described as a clear threat to Nigeria’s democracy and stability, asking them to hold accountable those who are undermining the integrity of the electoral process.
The Party called on Nigerians to defend democracy, saying unfolding events are defining moments in the country’s democratic history.
