The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has condemned the quick assent to the controversial Electoral Act amendment by President Bola Tinubu, saying the new law will deepen corruption in the nation’s electoral system.
A statement by the Spokesperson of the Party, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, questioned Tinubu’s undue haste to sign the Bill into law, even in the face of widespread objections by citizens across the country.
Bolaji said it is a clear indication of the ruling Party’s elaborate scheme to rig the 2027 election. Stating that the President’s action draws a battle line between Nigerians and the APC.
The opposition vowed to mobilise citizens in the 36 States and politicial affiliations to frustrate rigging by any means necessary before, during and after the 2027 elections, for stronger accountability and the full modernization of electoral system.
The Party further noted that despite claiming to control more than 30 State governors and commanding a majority in both chambers of the National Assembly, the extraordinary haste with which thie amendment was passed and signed, raises the unavoidable question on what the APC’s government is afraid of.
It expressed disappointment over failure to seek wider consultations to meaningfully engage with Nigerians, raising concerns over what the recent Presidential assent aportends for Nigeria’s forthcoming elections.
