The Abuja Electricity Distribution Company, AEDC, has disconnected the electric power supply to the Minna New Medium custodial centre, Tunga, Niger state.
The prison housing high and low-profile inmates, including Inmates on Death Row, IDR, have been in darkness, over the last 48 hours.
In a statement by the command’s spokesman, Chief Superintendent of Corrections, CSC, Rabiu Shuibu, the action of the company has put the inmates in a dehumanising condition, and poses a high security risk to the facility.
According to him, all efforts by the prison management to compel AEDC to reconnect the facility fell on deaf ears.
The service is calling on Governor Umar Bago, and well-meaning citizens of the state to intervene, and prevail on AEDC, to restore power supply to the facility, to avert any unwanted situation that may disrupt the existing peace and security of the state, and the nation at large.
The Tunga Correctional Centre was attacked twice in the past, which led to the escape of many dangerous convicts, and Awaiting Trial Inmates, ATIs, some of whom have not been recaptured.
