AFCON 2022: Injury rules out Victor Osimhen from participating

Nigeria’s inform striker Victor Osimhen may not be available for the African Cup of Nations scheduled to start in 47 days.

The Italian club of the player, Napoli has announced that he is expected to be out of action for three months following a successful cheekbone operation.

This means the striker has been automatically ruled out of the Africa nations cup which starts in less than two months in Cameroon.

Osimhen who jointly topped scoring in the qualification campaign to the AFCON suffered multiple fractures to his face on Sunday in Napoli’s three two loss to inter in the Serie A.

In a report published on Napoli’s website titanium plates were used in the operation carried out by professor Gianpaolo Tartaro of the second university, Naples.

The professor of maxillo facial surgery said on an Italian radio station, that the injury was a compression and not a shock, he noted that six titanium plates and eighteen screws were used in the intervention.

He admitted that it is too early to give a perfect recovery period because of the complex nature of the injury but gave a prognosis period of 90 days.

Nigeria will open their AFCON campaign against Egypt in 49 days time, two days after the opening ceremony.

The Nigeria Football Federation is yet to make an official comment on the issue.
