The Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) has chosen 22 athletes for the World Athletics Championships, set to begin on July 15, in Eugene, Oregon, USA.

Top of the contingent for Team Nigeria are the sprint hurdler, Tobi Amusan and long jumper, Ese Brume,
Brume won bronze in the last World Championships three years ago in Doha, Qatar and will be trying to become the first Nigerian athlete to take home medals at two World Championships.

Amusan, on her part, will be looking to replicate the fortunes of compatriot, Glory Alozie, who won a silver medal in the sprint hurdle event in Seville, Spain in 1999, to become the second sprint hurdler from Nigeria to win a medal at the Championships after finishing fourth in Doha three years ago.

Nigeria’s shot putter, Chukwuebuka Enekwechi, was also chosen, so was sprinter, Favour Ofili, who made it to the semi-final in the 400m event in her debut three years ago. She will compete in the 100 and 200-meter races, where her main goal is to become the first Nigerian, male or female, to place first in the 100-meter race.

Other sprinters in the team are Rosemary Chukwuma, Grace Nwokocha. Favour Ashe, Udodi Onwuzurike, Raymond Ekevwo, Ezekiel Nathaniel, Imaobong Nse Uko, Ruth Usoro, Sade Olatoye, Chioma Onyekwere, Godson Brume and Ushoritse, were named in the list.
