It was a tragic Tuesday evening in Kirchinga, a quiet community in Adamawa State, when suspected members of Boko Haram stormed the local market, opening fire that reportedly claimed the lives of 18 people.
Eyewitnesses say the assault began at the bustling marketplace before spreading into surrounding neighbourhoods.
Several houses were set ablaze, and property worth millions of naira was destroyed in the coordinated attack.
Governor Ahmadu Fintiri has visited the affected community to commiserate with families of the victims
The Governor, who hails from Kirchinga, described the attack as barbaric and an act of cowardice by the perpetrators
The Governor was accompanied by heads of security agencies in the state to assesse the level of destruction and assured residents that additional security personnel would be deployed to vulnerable communities, especially those sharing boundaries with the dreaded Sambisa Forest.
He specifically mentioned the newly recruited forest guards as part of efforts to strengthen local intelligence and rapid response operations.
Security agencies have since intensified surveillance operations in the area.
