The Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, has urged members of the inter-ministerial management committee on the eradication of sexual and gender-based violence, to help in saving women and children from the menace of rape and child abuse in Nigeria.
The Minister said this during the inauguration of the committee on the eradication of Sexual and Gender-Based Violence, SGBV, at the Ministry of Justice on Thursday.
The Committee, according to the Minister, is to carry out a holistic examination of issues from the legal, socio-cultural, and economic perspectives.
The Committee is also expected to develop and implement effective approaches for prevention and effective responses whenever the crime occurs
He said the inauguration of the committee is the Ministry’s fulfilment of its mandate as the primary institution responsible for the administration of justice, as they collaborate with the United Nations and civil society organisations and tap from their wealth of experiences to achieve this objective.
The Committee comprises of representatives from the Ministry of Justice, Ministry of Health, that of Women Affairs, the police, civil society organisations, among others, and are charged with conducting a review of all existing laws and policy instruments touching on offences of rape, child defilement and gender-based violence.

The committee is to develop for adoption, a national prevention of sexual abuse strategy for the period of 2021 to 2025.
