President of the Senate, Ahmad Lawan has assured Nigerian women that he will support and remain committed to the
advancement to their rights and full participation in governance.
Lawan gave the assurance when he received in audience the Directir-General, National Centre for Women Development Asabe Bashir who was accompanied by UNWOMEN Country Representative, Comfort Lamptey.

Others in the high- powered advocacy visit to Lawan was Senator Abiodun Olujimi.
The visit was to seek support from the Senate President as co-sponsor of the revised Gender and Equal Opportunities Bill( GEOBILL).
According to the group, women make up half of Nigeria’s population, and such should not be denied the opportunity to serve government at all levels”.
The team presented the revised GEOBill which has adopted recommendations that addressed initial objections. .
Lawan commended the team for strategically making the visit while the constitution is being reviewed.
The Gender and Equal Opportunities Bill was initially sponsored by Senator Abiodun Olujimi in 2015.
