President of the Nigerian Senate, Godswill Akpabio has dismissed rumors that the Department of State Services (DSS) has taken control of the National Assembly to thwart an alleged impeachment plot against him.
Speaking during Wednesday’s plenary, Akpabio labeled the circulating social media reports, which suggested that DSS operatives were on standby to prevent his removal, as false.
An online news outlet had reported on Tuesday that the presence of DSS agents within the National Assembly had intensified.
The report also claimed that some discontented Northern Senators, unhappy with President Bola Tinubu, were rekindling efforts to remove Akpabio from his position.
In response, Akpabio directed the Senate Committee on Special Duties to investigate the allegations and present a report within 24 hours.
He criticized some online platforms for using Artificial Intelligence (AI) to fabricate misleading content about him for increased traffic.
This is not the first time of impeachment rumors surrounding Akpabio.
Shortly after his election as Senate President in 2023, several aggrieved in 2senators were alleged to have attempted to rally support for his removal.
