President of the Nigerian Senate, Godswill Akpabio, has arrived in Istanbul, Türkiye, for the 152nd Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union, hosted by the Grand National Assembly of Türkiye from April 15 to 19, 2026.
His delegation, comprising members of the National Assembly of Nigeria, was received on arrival at the Presidential Wing of Atatürk Airport by the Governor of Bakırköy, Recai Karal.
Held under the theme, “Nurturing hope, securing peace and ensuring justice for future generations,” the IPU session comes at a critical moment amid unfolding conflicts and humanitarian crises in the Middle East and other parts of the world.
The assembly is expected to bring together hundreds of lawmakers from across the globe to strengthen parliamentary dialogue and diplomacy in pursuit of peaceful solutions to global challenges.
Key highlights of the session include meetings across all IPU bodies, including Standing Committees and forums for Women and Young Parliamentarians.

Discussions on post-conflict peacebuilding, trade cooperation, and tackling corporate tax avoidance
Commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the IPU Committee on the Human Rights of Parliamentarians
Workshops on disability inclusion, interfaith dialogue, the two-State solution, and climate action
Election of a new Secretary-General to succeed Martin Chungong
Adoption of the IPU Strategy for 2027–2032
Opening of nominations for the 2026 Cremer-Passy Prize
As the global organization of national parliaments, the Inter-Parliamentary Union continues to play a vital role in promoting peace, democracy, and sustainable development, while strengthening parliamentary institutions to become more inclusive, representative, and resilient.
