President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, has threatened to take legal action against the contractor responsible for renovating the National Assembly complex over persistent technical faults affecting proceedings in both legislative chambers.
Akpabio issued the warning during Wednesday’s plenary after senators repeatedly struggled with malfunctioning microphones, saying the recurring failures had become an embarrassment to the National Assembly and the country.
Despite billions of naira spent on the renovation of the National Assembly complex, lawmakers have continued to experience malfunctioning microphones, poor audio quality, and a non-functional electronic voting system since they returned to the refurbished chambers in April 2024.
Expressing his frustration, Akpabio recalled a similar experience in the House of Representatives chamber while representing the Senate at the Open Week organised by the House of Representatives.
The Senate President warned that if the situation persists, the National Assembly will not hesitate to pursue legal remedies against the contractor.
The renewed complaints have again raised questions about the quality of the renovation work carried out on the National Assembly complex, with lawmakers continuing to encounter technical glitches that disrupt legislative proceedings more than a year after returning to the refurbished chambers.
