The government of Akwa Ibom State is to establish fifty hectares of coconut plantation in each of the 31 Local Government Areas of the state.
This was part of the resolution reached at the end of the State Executive Council meeting presided over by Governor Udom Emmanuel at the Government House, Uyo.
The Akwa Ibom government says it is part of efforts to pioneer a coconut plantation revolution in Nigeria.
Already a plantation has been established while a refinery is at an advanced stage of completion.
To further boost the initiative, the state executive council has approved the planting of 300 stands of coconut in each of the 230 public secondary schools in the state in addition to a fifty-hectare plantation in each of the 31 Local Government Areas.
Also, the state government is to construct a low-density housing estate on a 167 hectare of land along the airport road to help redress the housing deficit in the state.
The estate will comprise four blocks of 450 units with modern amenities including gas supply to individual blocks.
