The Vice Chancellor of Usman Danfodio University, Sokoto, Professor Bilbis Lawal, has debunked reports circulating on social media that suspected bandits attacked the main campus of the university on Monday night.

The vice chancellor, who clarified the attack to newsmen on Tuesday in his office, said the attack was a case of robbery on the mini-mart and not bandits, as being speculated in some quarters.

Professor Lawal called on members of the public and parents to stay calm, saying there is no cause for alarm over the security of their children or wards.

He appreciates the efforts of journalists coming to the institution to find out what happened and put out the right information to douse the ongoing tension, occasioned by the falsehood being speculated on social media, that it was a bandits’ invasion.

According to the VC, “I was alerted by security officials of the school about the incident, and when I arrived at the Mini Mart where the incident happened at about 11 p.m. yesterday, it was observed that it was a case of armed robbery and not bandits.”

He said the hoodlums carted away two cartons of Maltina drinks and eight mobile phones belonging to some students.

The handsets were plugged into the mart for charging.

Professor Lawal said he immediately alerted the security agents, including the police, and the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, and they all responded promptly by sending men to the scene.

Some parents were worried because of the recent abduction of some female students from the Federal University in Gusau, Zamfara State, which is a neighbouring state to Sokoto State in northwest Nigeria.
