The Federal Capital Territory High Court has adjourned hearing in a 5.5 billion Naira Alleged defamation suit, instituted against Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) by two operatives of the State Security Service, to November 12, 2025
Hearing was adjourned by the trial Judge Justice Yusuf Halilu, following the absence of SERAP’s lawyer, Ebun Adegboruwa SAN in court.
The claimants in the suit, had filed the action against SERAP on the grounds that the organization defamed them in a media publication, noting that they unlawfully invaded their office, thereby putting their reputation as law abiding security operatives in jeopardy.
They are urging the court to order SERAP to pay the sum of 5.5b naira as compensation for damages they suffered.
They are also urging the trial judge to issue an order of perpetual injunction against serap restraining it from further defaming them.
However, during proceedings, SERAP’s lawyer, Ebun Adegboruwa, wrote a letter to the court informing it that he would not be able to attend proceeding as he had a matter at the court of appeal in Lagos, asking for an adjournment till November 12.
Counsel for the claimants, Akinlolu Kehinde did not oppose the request for an adjournment, promoting the trial Judge to fixed November 12 for SERAP to Defend itself in the suit.
The claimants are Sarah John and Gabriel Ogunleye, with SERAP as the sole defendant in the suit.
