Nigeria’s war against fake and substandard products in open markets is being intensified with a policy launch that will involve multi-agency cooperation to clamp down on manufacturers and marketers of such products.

At a media briefing in Awka, Anambra State, the State government said there will henceforth be greater enforcement of the minimum specified standards for manufacturers in the pharmaceutical and beverages sector, housing materials and other products in the state’s open markets

Onitsha in Anambra State, South East Nigeria February this year witnessed influx of what regulators described as fake and substandard products especially in the drugs section of the large market, forcing a shutdown of the market for almost a month.

Authorities and stakeholders in the regulatory sector at this media event are renewing the call on stricter clampdown on promoters of such products

Officials are not only worried about the negative health effects of substandard products, but the need for consumers to get value for what they pay for, calling for stricter prosecution for those found guilty.

The Standards Organization of Nigeria (SON), also want greater public enlightenment for all within the market chain to enable them differentiate between real and fake products
