The dominant political party in South Africa, the African National Congress, ANC has criticised the actions of some of its community leaders over the xenophobic attacks in the cities of Kwazulu-Natal province.
In a statement by its provisional spokesperson, Sifoso Sonjica, the ANC said its community leaders who are acting irresponsibily will make South Africa a pariah state over the attacks on foreigners deemed to be illegal migrants.
The ANC in Kwazulu Natal called for an end to all violence, vigilantism and harassment of vulnerable persons.
The statement adds that collaboration among all stakeholders for a resolution of the contentious issues on lawful migration remains key, while it called on the security operatives to arrest the trend.
There has been a resurgence of assault of foreigners in South Africa in the last four weeks by groups of persons who say migrants must leave.
The South African government condemned the attacks, even as its cabinet office later said viral images of attacks on foreigners were fake and outdated.
