Plateau State House of Assembly has elected a new Speaker in an emergency sitting held Wednesday, at the temporary Assembly Complex.
The 24 members of the Assembly voted to elect Nanloong Daniel of the All Progressives Congress, APC as their new leader. Daniel, formerly the Majority Leader and member representing Mikang State Constituency in the 9th Assembly, now assumes the helms of affairs.
This development follows the resignation of the immediate past Speaker, Gabriel Dewan of the Young Progressives Party, YPP. His resignation comes amid ongoing peace efforts aimed at resolving the political tensions in the state with APC having majority members in the Assembly after the Court of Appeal sacked PDP lawmakers.
The election of Speaker Naanlong took place after a crucial closed-door meeting held earlier in the day. That meeting involved Governor Caleb Mutfwang, the former Speaker Gabriel Dewan, and other key lawmakers. The Assembly’s session where Daniel was elected was presided over by the Deputy Speaker, Ajang Azi.
