The 55-year old Kashim Shettima was born on September 2, 1966 to the family of Sir Kashim Ibrahim. His father was Governor of the defunct Northern Region in 1962 before the first military coup of January 15, 1966. He was also Federal Minister for Social Services and later that of Education before the country’s independence in 1960.
Kashim Shettima is married to Nana Shettima, and they have three children: two females and a male.
He has been a close associate of the All Progressives Congress Presidential, APC candidate, Bola Tinubu.
A former Governor of Borno State from May 2011 to May 2019, Senator Shettima’s tenure was a turbulent one, no thanks to the activities of the Jamāʿat Ahl al-Sunnah li-l-Daʿawah wa al-Jihād, popularly known as Boko Haram which has transformed to the Islamic State West Africa Province, ISWAP.
He attended Lamisula Primary School in Maiduguri from 1972 to 1978; Government Community Secondary School, Biu in southern part of Borno State from 1978 to 1980; and transferred to the Government Science Secondary School, Potiskum now in neighbouring Yobe State where he completed his secondary education in 1983.

He studied at the University of Maiduguri and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Agricultural Economics in 1989.
He had his one-year compulsory national service of the National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, at the defunct Nigerian Agricultural Cooperative Bank in Calabar, capital of Cross River State in South-South, Nigeria, from 1989 to 1990.
He obtained a Master’s degree in Agricultural Economics in 1991 at the University of Ibadan in South-West, Nigeria.
Shettima joined the University of Maiduguri as a lecturer with the Department of Agricultural Economics and was in the academia from 1991 to 1993.
He currently represents Borno Central Senatorial District at the National Assembly.
Borno Central comprises of eight local government areas including Maiduguri, Jere, Konduga, Bama, Mafa, Dikwa, Ngala and Kala Balge.
