The Nigeria Aquatics Federation has reaffirmed its long-standing partnership with the Nigerian Navy following a courtesy visit to the Chief of Naval Staff at Naval Headquarters in Abuja.
President of the Federation, Nnamdi Chamberlain Dunkwu, led a high-level delegation and was received on behalf of the Chief of Naval Staff by the Chief of Administration, Rear Admiral J.N. Maman, alongside other senior naval officers.
During the visit, Dunkwu expressed deep appreciation to the Nigerian Navy for sponsoring the Chief of Naval Staff Swimming Championship since the year 2000.
He described the championship as a transformative initiative that has grown from just 13 teams at inception to more than 20 teams drawn from states, military institutions, universities and private academies across the country.
According to him, the competition has evolved beyond a sporting event into a national platform for talent discovery, youth engagement and institutional collaboration.
Dunkwu noted that at critical moments in the Federation’s history, the Navy provided vital support that helped sustain the sport, producing athletes who have gone on to earn scholarships abroad and represent Nigeria internationally.
He also stressed that swimming is not only a competitive sport but a life-saving skill, particularly for a country blessed with vast rivers and coastal waters.
Responding on behalf of the Chief of Naval Staff, Rear Admiral Maman reaffirmed the Navy’s commitment to aquatic development.
He urged the Federation to expand into other disciplines such as sailing, rowing, kayaking and diving, noting that the Navy has the facilities and technical expertise to support broader growth in the sector.
Both parties agreed that deeper collaboration, grassroots investment and structured partnerships will be key to producing world-class athletes and promoting water safety nationwide.
The visit featured the signing of the visitors’ book, exchange of souvenirs and a group photograph, symbolising renewed commitment between both institutions.
The renewed partnership is expected to strengthen aquatic sports development and expand opportunities for young Nigerians across the country.
